It might seem cheaper to keep old technology going for as long as possible but the true cost of ownership might shock you. What is the real cost of old technology and what can we do to change this?

Security

Older PCs (3+ years) are 28% more susceptible to viruses. Laptops of the same age are 58% more susceptible to viruses.

Older technology is less likely to be updated and patched to protect against developments in cyber crime. Additionally, older devices aren’t always capable of running the latest software and OS, and software providers stop providing support for extremely old software.

The HP 2015 Cyber Risk report confirms this, saying that over 40% of cyber attacks are because of cyber criminals exploiting vulnerabilities that had been patched 2-4 years ago. Some of the most commonly used software, such as Microsoft Windows, Adobe Reader and Oracle Java are often targeted by cyber criminals, which is why frequent updates are developed and made available to users.

Customer perception

A study by Boston Consulting Group revealed that 90% of customers surveyed would take their business elsewhere because of old technology. The reason? Old technology makes businesses look less professional. In a world where security leaks and cyber crime are on the rise, customers need to know that your business is current, up to date and ready to protect their data.

Employee productivity

UK workers are losing millions of working hours each week because of poor technology in the office. Millions of working hours. Let that sink in. Is your IT department causing you to lose money and hours?

This was from a survey of 1,000 office workers, who discovered that a total of 7.5 million working days each week were being wasted – as a direct result of inadequate technology provided by their employer.

Unsurprisingly, 59% of them said that their personal mobile phone was better than the one provided by the business, with a further 60% confirming that tech related issues at work stopped them doing their job properly.

If we’re aware of the problem, then what happens next? Contracting a total solution is one of the easiest solutions. A subscription-based service delivers devices, software and support all in one easily configured and managed monthly fee. This type of service fits to your business needs, allowing you to upgrade when new versions of devices or software and procure equipment for new employees when you need it.

Cost

On the surface it might appear cheaper to keep the same old tech going for longer. This is a time and resource intensive process and one you should question. Is it worth investing so much into subpar technology that doesn’t meet the needs of your users?

Small business of up to 99 employees are spending between $427-521 per PC, per year on repairing older PCs. This equals or exceeds the purchase price of some new PCs. Think of it this way; you’re not just spending money on old technology, you’re losing IT time on repairs, employee time on downtime and management time trying to organise solutions on the fly.

According to Intel and Techaisle, the magic number - when buying a PC becomes cheaper than maintenance - is three. When a PC reaches three years old it will begin to experience higher failure rates and many more virus infections.

On-demand technology

The industry is giving small businesses more options than ever when it comes to procuring technology and software services, as it begins to move from transactional to contractual. You can order everything you need to get your business running smoothly in one, remotely handled package.<

Software as a Service (SaaS) like Microsoft Office 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud opened up access to expensive software that was previously out of reach for small businesses.  Meanwhile Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) have changed how businesses and customers interact, with services like Heroku, Cisco Metapod, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

The next challenge is to find managed PC and device services, which not only simplify your IT output and take the headache and complexity out of managing your business, but also gives you a lower total cost of ownership with the added benefit of extra control over your cash flow.
